Sean Smith, Head Coach
Sean Smith is in the 8th year of his coaching career and 4th consecutive year as a member of our 18 Red coaching staff. Over the course of his career, Sean's teams have consistently qualified for Nationals including nine total bids to Nationals. Leading our 18s division, Sean teams have all qualified with two Open bids and two National bids including this season. Sean's 13 White team achieved our highest ever qualification for White team with a National bid in 2016. Sean was an assistant on our first National Championship in the 15 American Division in 2013 with Head Coach Meghan Gray.
Sean's success as a coach is a natural extension of his connection to the game. Sean's parents met playing sand volleyball and are both huge supporters of his teams. He grew up playing at a time when Boy's Volleyball was an afterthought in the region, but still developed into a highly sought after player who attended California Baptist University to continue his playing career. He also had a playing stint at Hannibal LaGrange before returning home to Dallas where he has been coaching ever since. Sean's success as a player comes from his ability to read the game and make great decisions. He is a disruptive blocker with a well known lethal serve. Sean's abilities to set and train setters has been a key component of the development of many setters who have come through the club including 16W Assistant Coach Riley Duzenack (Mississippi State).
Sean is a visible member of the adult volleyball community on the sand as well as the indoor side of the game. Volleyball is truly a family affair with his parents still competing themselves. His brother, Trevor Callarman, is the Head Coach at University of Maryland Eastern Shore. His sister Alyson Grevsmuehl competed for Excel including playing for Sean at 16W in a special season including a USA Qualifier Championship at Northern Lights. Alyson also now coaches for Excel as well.
