Summer Alford, Head Coach

Coach Summer will be entering her third year at Excel in the 2021-2022 season. In 2020, she was introduced to Excel Boys volleyball as an assistant coach for 16 Red. On the girls side, she has been working with our 17 White teams for the past 2 years and has led them to overall top 20 NTR finishes with Gold finishes at Regionals. Summer came to Excel after coaching with Instinct VBC and qualifying 2 teams for nationals.

Summer competed for Kentucky Wesleyan and finished her collegiate career at Texas A&M Commerce. As a six rotation outside hitter, she garnered a number of Player of the Week awards, two First Team All Conference nods, Freshman of the Year, and also finished with multiple program records that still uphold to this day.

Summer is a tough but supportive coach who is focused on solid fundamentals and volleyball IQ. She has a consistent, calm demeanor and loves to teach the game with discipline and develop smart players. Originally from Fort Worth, Summer still loves to compete but also enjoys winding down with some HGTV and her dog, Pepper.

In 2016, Shea led our 15 Red team to double qualify Open, medaling at both the Lone Star Qualifier as well as the Northern Lights Qualifier. Additionally, Shea's 17s team finished the season with a Silver Medal in the National Division at USAVs. Shea's teams are typically marked by great chemistry and competitiveness.

Prior to his coaching career, Shea competed at University of Texas at Arlington for their club team before moving to California to compete for their varsity program. He was a member of the National Championship NAIA team at Cal Bap in 2010. Ultimately, Shea completed his degree in Kinesiology from UTA paying for school through his coaching career and hard work in the gym. Shea is a well-rounded volleyball player despite his size with the ability to play most every position (save for middle blocker).

Shea is motivated by developing great coach-player relationships with the players who compete for him. He is pivotal in getting our college players back in the gym to compete and mentor younger athletes. Shea is marked by a clear devotion to family, specifically his two nieces. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Shea helps to manage operations at the Courtside facility.
